Best Moments of 2015
This was an incredible year for ebb + flow yoga! We expanded our yoga offerings, broadened our network, and gave back to our communities in DC and NJ. Here are just few snapshots of who inspired us this year and what we’re looking forward to in 2016.
This summer I was grateful to teach at Key Bridge Boathouse in DC with incredibly soulful SUP yoga teachers Corey Cohn and Kara-anne Curl. We introduced two levels of classes – beginner and intermediate – for the first time to provide an opportunity for newbies and experienced SUP yogis alike to enjoy being out on the water. We also led sunrise yoga on the docks, a blissful start to summer weekends.

Finding Guidance: The Ben Appelbaum Foundation
In early 2015, I was selected for a mentorship through the Ben Appelbaum Foundation, which helps entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations through mentoring, advisory services, and educational workshops. During the Ben Appelbaum Foundation’s annual reception in New York City, I made connections that are continuing to improve ebb + flow’s business outlook, and I look forward to future growth thanks to our collaboration.
Bliss on Long Beach Island: Bliss Paddle Yoga Teacher Training + Liquid Bliss Yoga
This summer, everything came full circle for me on Long Beach Island, NJ as I joined SUP yoga teacher training with Ashley Quinn of Liquid Bliss Yoga and reconnected with California-based Bliss Paddle Yoga teachers Taylor Chaput and Dana Mitchell. It was back in 2013 that I joined the first Bliss Paddle Yoga teacher training on the east coast in Belmar, NJ, and I was so pumped to revisit that experience and find new inspiration! I so enjoyed the opportunity to teach with Liquid Bliss and feel grateful ebb + flow is a part of the larger LBI and SUP yoga community!
#MermaidYogis East Coast Meet-up
This summer ebb + flow yoga floated to Maryland’s Eastern Shore to join the Mermaid Yogis East Coast Meet-up. Mermaid Yogis are a group of water loving yoga addicts – men and women alike, from all backgrounds, coming together via social media and meeting up in real life. #MermaidYogis blossomed from a deep love of the ocean, yoga, and community, and in 2014, #MermaidYogis meet-ups brought together over 300 yogis from Southern California. In summer 2015, this event came to the east coast for the first time with Stoked Yogi lifestyle brand creator and original mermaid yogi, Amelia Travis, and BeachBee Yoga & SUP owner, Mary K. Benney. It was an incredible experience creating connections with Amelia, Mary K., Melanie Smith, and so many others – we had a total blast sharing in the joy and love of yoga!
The Studio DC Yoga Center Takes to the Water
In August, we were thrilled to partner with The Studio DC and Key Bridge Boathouse for a special workshop just for Studio DC yogis. The setting was perfect: a sunny day and calm waters allowed us to get into some challenging poses while finding our connection to nature. It was wonderful to introduce such adventurous yogis to a whole new perspective on their practice. I’m pleased we have some SUP yoga converts as a result!
New ebb + flow yoga Gear (Get Yours)!
As mermaids at heart and water warriors, the ebb + flow yoga community loves to represent! We worked with our neighbors at BaseCamp to create one-of-a-kind tees and tanks that we love to live in – comfortable, functional, and oh so mellow. Plus, the original ebb + flow SUP yoga Croakie made a comeback this year as the perfect way to keep your sunnies attached in downward facing dog.

SUP Yoga with South End Surf N Paddle
We are thrilled to partner with Ken and Sheryl of South End Surf N Paddle on Long Beach Island, NJ to offer SUP yoga on Barnegat Bay. Whether we host special donation classes or sunset gatherings, SUP yoga with South End always means coming together with family and friends on the water. So grateful for every moment of 2015, and looking forward to all that this community holds for us in the new year!
Workplace Wellness Resources
One of my passions is providing resources for students to find ease in every day. I know from personal experience how important it is to step back and check in with mind, body, and spirit on a daily basis, no matter where you are.
This year, I was lucky to have the opportunity for yoga breaks at work thanks to Anna Tecson of First Thought Yoga. Anna’s relaxing office yoga and hatha yoga classes created the perfect retreat during hectic weeks. So grateful for the time and energy she dedicated to us!
Check out this video of First Thought Yoga’s workplace offerings, as well as my recent blog post with ideas to keep calm and do yoga at work:
Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training
This fall, I took some time for my own development as a teacher and enrolled in Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training. I’ve always been interested in how women can use yoga to ease the mind and connect with the body during pregnancy’s changes. One of the research areas I’ll be exploring through this training is pregnancy and SUP yoga. I’ve already learned so much from Anne Thiel at Tranquil Space Yoga and look forward to completing the training soon.
Stay tuned for more information about future ebb + flow prenatal yoga offerings!
Giving to the ALS Association
The cause dearest to ebb + flow yoga’s heart is the ALS Association, the nonprofit leading the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy, while also providing compassionate care and support for people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families. In 2015, ebb + flow yoga raised over $650 for the ALS Association by donating a portion of students’ class costs and dedicating a SUP yoga class to the cause.
We’re excited to announce that ebb + flow yoga will be offering Yoga for Caregivers through the DC/MD/VA Chapter of the ALS Association this year – stay tuned for updates about this important new collaboration.
Thank you, 2015. Sending so much gratitude to everyone who shared their light and love with us!
Here’s to new opportunities in 2016!
